THE SUSTAINABLE LIVING PROJECT 2022
A very simple way to bring about this impact is 5 simple Lifestyle changes through awareness and guidance.
The project has been fragmented into smaller task to be implemented one at a time monthly. The key is to create a chain of influence and the achievements to be acknowledged with certification that can be a part of student portfolios.
The tasks are simple 5 lifestyle swaps that are easy to implement but have a huge impact.
TASK 1 - BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH
According to a research, Plastic toothbrushes are the 2nd largest Plastic waste generation after plastic bags. Only in India more than 150 million plastic toothbrushes are thrown in garbage every month i.e. 50 million pounds of waste added to landfills. The plastic used is indestructible and the microplastics is extremely damaging to humans and the natural environment. Plastic toothbrushes end up in oceans and harms the marine life, they stain the landfills with their presence and release harmful chemicals into the air as they settle. This results in more and more damage to the environment and you are a part of that environment.
Isn’t this concerning enough to make a switch? There is a very easy way to do it.
Sustainable Switch - Switch to BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSHES.

Task 2 – The Green Bin
According to the Food Waste Index Report 2021 published by the United Nation Environment Programme, 50 Kg of Food is thrown away per person every year in Indian Homes i.e., 68,760,163 tonnes a year. Indian households rank second highest for food wastage in the world. (Food enough to feed a small country like Guinea)
The excess food waste usually ends up in landfills, creating potent greenhouse gases like Methane which have dire environmental implications (8-10% of global greenhouse gas emission are associated with food that is not consumed)
Sustainable Switch - A very simple lifestyle change is to keep a separate bin to collect all the food waste like peels, eggshells, left over etc. that can be used to feed the strays like cows or create good amount of organic compost for healthy produce.

Task 3 – The Tissue Issue
Tissue Paper is one product that we consider so insignificant that all it takes is to pull it out to wipe of slight dirt and dispose it. In our daily routine, on our kitchen shelves, our washrooms, to manage our hygiene, we bank on Tissues.
While as we use this product without much consideration, it’s important to understand that the process of manufacturing it is contributing to climate change. So many trees have to be cut to meet the excessive demand of toilet rolls and tissue papers. Not just that, chlorine used to bleach the pulp causes excessive water wastage and pollution.
Though the use of tissue or toilet roll has not been much in our country compared to United states but the demand of tissue paper in our country is rising more with the current generation using it more.
A solution to Deforestation and water pollution, is a simple switch- cloth napkins

Sustainable Switch –
A simple lifestyle change of conscious use of tissue paper can make a significant difference on the environment. It might be impractical to eliminate the usage of tissues but making a conscious decision to avoid unnecessary use. A few lifestyle changes like can make a huge difference to reduce carbon footprints.
Replace kitchen towels with mop cloth.
Use Hand towels/ washing directly instead of wipes.
Water bidets /jets spray instead of Toilet rolls
Napkins instead of Tissue boxes.

Task 4 - Sustainable Mensuration
Another major contributor to environmental crises is something that we just roll and chuck it,
sparing a little thought to what will happen to the sanitary pads after use. On an average, number of sanitary pads used per mensuration cycle are 8, making about 12.3 billion disposable sanitary pads generates every year, which is a huge concern.
According to Mensurational Health Alliance India, one sanitary pad takes 500-800 years to decompose leading to severe health and environmental hazards.
One sanitary pad is equivalent to four plastic bags. Isn’t it alarming enough to make the switch?
Sustainable switch – A simple switch to Biodegradable sanitary choice can make huge positive impact on environmental solutions. With the widespread awareness, Biodegradable Sanitary Pads are easily available and economical. Conscious choice by girls and their families will certainly yield positive results.
Another sustainable choice is the Mensurational cups, is economical, toxin free and eco-friendly. It can be recycled easily with no harm to the planet.
